The Australian healthcare system is designed to allow patients to access prescriptions while travelling within Australia. Whether you are moving house, travelling for leisure, or utilising our telehealth consultation in Perth while working remotely, the National Prescription Delivery Service (NPDS) supports recognition of eScripts across Australian states and territories, subject to applicable legislation.
According to the Single Source of Truth principle, a digitally signed prescription (eScript) issued by an AHPRA-registered doctor in one state may be dispensed by participating pharmacists in other states, provided it complies with Australian national and local regulations.
This process reduces reliance on paper prescriptions and supports digital access to medications. For more thorough information, go to the eScript & Prescription Access Hub.
The heart of the cross-state prescription system is a national technical framework. If a registered doctor issues an eScript, the information is stored within a Prescription Delivery Service (PDS) operating under the national electronic prescribing framework. This data is not sent to a specific pharmacy; rather, it is structured so that participating pharmacists may retrieve the prescription record with the patient's consent.
Digital tokens offer significant convenience for travellers, especially those who frequently use services like our online doctor consultation in Adelaide. Digital tokens reduce the need to carry paper prescriptions while travelling.
The typical procedure comes into play if you happen to be away from your home state:
For additional safety tips on carrying your digital health documents, see the section on sending e-scripts to your pharmacy safely.
If your prescription allows refills, you may switch to another pharmacy after the initial one.
Despite the system's reliability, travelling across state lines can still be challenging due to technical or regulatory factors.
Medical privacy is protected under federal legislation, and it does not change when you cross state borders. Healthcare providers across Australia must comply with the Privacy Act 1988, the Australian Privacy Principles, and the Digital Health Consumer Protections Law.
To find out more about your data protection during such transfers, visit our privacy rules for storing prescription data. You can also view official guidelines on the SAHealth: Interstate Prescriptions page.

Speak with an Australian-registered doctor. If clinically appropriate, an eScript may be issued following a clinical assessment.
